Mari Chair

Adaptation of a design for self-build/ design chair originally envisioned by Enzo Mari as part of his Autoprogettazione pamphlet, a book to encourage novices to try building their own joinery from affordable solid timber planks inspired from his designs.

The 1123xQ was modified to work with sizes of timber available within walking distance of the workshop, whilst maintaining the same sectional strength and ‘personality’ of Mari’s original design. The first attempt was then reviewed to find a more efficient build order for the second version, along with improved screw positions to be more visually appealing and robust.

These experiments later formed the basis for a chair making workshop with members of the public as part of an introduction to first using power tools.
