Lifeguard Station

Several of our members participated in the design and build of a lifeguard station/ events stage/ boat stand as part of the Crossings Festival in Southern Italy.

Designed and built in collaboration with international students and educators, local residents, and refugees eager to share their knowledge and skills, this temporary structure was assembled through determined people-power beneath the scorching sun of an Italian summer.

Following simple robust construction principles and formed from readily-available affordable timber, the lifeguard station was an opportunity for inexperienced makers to practice and become competent with simple tools, crafting a solid structure at an inhabitable scale.

The completion was celebrated with meals, music and dance around the tower, sharing stories and new experiences before the team departed for home.

Led by Orizzontale, in coordination with Le Seppie, students and teachers from London Metropolitan University and funding by Erasmus+.
