Chair Making Workshop

A summer workshop exploring the design, making, and personal customisation of robust chairs inspired by the designs of Enzo Mari as part of his Autoprogettazione or ‘self-design’ ethos aimed at empowering people through the act of making furniture.

Taught alongside members of the London-based CRAFT skill-sharing community, eager novices were taught the basics of using a drill including good practice such as countersinking and screw placement. With Mari’s designs as a jumping off point, participants were encouraged to explore how this could be adapted for their own use, with assistance from knowledgeable tutors where needed.

From readily-available softwood lengths already cut ahead of the session, simple joints were achieved with screws allowing the pieces to be dismantled or adapted easily in the future, whilst elements such as backrests could be removed for easier transportation.

Hosted at the workshop of The Bath House, Hackney, participants unwound to the sounds of sauna behind and dance classes behind the café, sitting on something they build with their own hands across the space of an afternoon. Made possible with the generous support of CRAFT and The Bath House.
